And the xinyao songs! So many of them! Really nostalgic...

Hurry, go watch it if u havent intended to. Anyway, tickets may be fully sold liao..

National Science Challenge 2007

Alot of people have not heard about NSC, it's this science competition for Secondary 3 students which I have been running for the past few years. I had fun organising this as I get to bring the students to a lot of places such as Jurong Island and mediacorp studios for recording (dun call it "filming", it's passe)

NSC will be starting it's run from 16 August, 7.30 pm on Channel 5 for seven epsiodes, do support leh... you can win a Sony PSP from the homeviewers quiz!

This picture was taken at the studio, nicely done cut out lights from the NSC logo

Oh my poor neck..

Had this conversation over dinner yesterday at Central's Waraku:

IP: My shoulders are feeling tight recently..
Me: It's because of playing too much ten-nis lah
IP: I think it's more due to ten-sion!

Press button if you feel like cutting your wrists..

Saw this at a local Research Institute! Oh dear, they are working the scientists hard nowadays..

Sad Movies

Its been a long time since I last cried in movie theatres.

And over the last one week, i actually cried for two movies!

Nayr and I were super lucky to get free preview tickets thru our work contacts - I got tickets to local film 881 while Nayr got tickets to Secret.

Both films are distinctively different, yet both are awfully touching.

I shan't be a spoiler and go on further.

You watch the films yourself, ya?

A Letter for Mr Jacky Cheung

Dear Mr Jacky Cheung,

Altho I know your songs are very nice, I was never exactly a fan of yours.

And when I saw you on TV one day, crooning & grooving (and should i say you were trying very hard to groove) to <听天由命>, a song that I never imagined would have come out of you, i was kinda glad I never was.

Sigh, what happened to you?!!

I like the old u better leh.. Tsk tsk.. What happened huh?

Btw, to make you feel better: at least I think your this song will be a great hit at Dragonfly.. haha..

Nayr: Seemed like I look fatter recently.. Haiz, must be the hairstyle..

Gnil: ... Mm.. No, I think it's the LIFESTYLE..

a day when rubbish didnt smell like rubbish

visited rubbish island today.
for the first time in my life, rubbish didnt stink. yes, it D.I.D.N.T.
in fact, i was sniffin so hard for the slightest tinge of that familiar (eew!) waft that will enter my nostril each time i pass by my void deck's rubbish chute.
nothing.
haha, realised how naive i was to also think i will be steppin on rubbish the moment i land my feet on the island..
anyway, i'm really impressed by how local solid waste is managed, after today. hmm, think i'll be more conscious of the things i throw away from now on..
So, kudos to our waste collectors & workers!

this is where wet ash (treated rubbish) from main land incineration plants are shipped and temporarily stored.

cells where wet ash are filled into - so these are the landfills. According to NEA, we are on our way to fill Cell no. 6, out of 12 cells in total on the island. the cells are expected to be filled up by 2040. wonder wat's gonna happen after that?

Beaulieu House in Sembawang Park

Nayr & I decided to pak tor and check out Beaulieu House Restaurant yday. (thanks to Yepeng for telling us abt the plc)
At first, we went searchin along the wrong road. I thought it was along Admiralty Road East. We had to stop by the side of the road, use our phone to check the gmail that Yepeng sent, got the no. of the restaurant, called them, only to realise they are actually in Sembawang Park! Duh, I feel so paiseh, cos its inside my territory, yet i didnt know it existed!
Anyway, it's really a nice place - quiet and romantic. It somehow resembles Galley by the Straits (at Admiralty Road West inside SAF Yacht Club). Even the price and the menu is rather similar.
There were not too many customers yesterday. Just a few couples and a group of Caucasians.

We asked the waitress how long they've been operating there. She answered in Chinese (strong Chinese accent) that the owner has run the business for over 20 years! We also checked out the history of the restaurant and the Sembawang area (printed and filed into a menu folder at the entrance).

There are both indoor and outdoor dining. Of cos, we chose outdoor. The setting is rather nice, except that the electricity tripped while we were halfway thu our meal! Luckily there were candlelights at every table. We were wondering if they placed them cos of the frequent blackouts, haha.
The food is ok, can say slightly above average. I tried the Seafood Combo. The grilled fish is yummy! But the prawns, mussels, oysters, etc are so-so only. Nayr tried the Chicken Lagsana, which tasted quite gelat after a while.. The bill was below $50. We then took a slow stroll along the beach for digestion after the meal. =) Atmosphere around the area is really nice. Hmm, I would rate it overall 4 out of 5.

Updates

Realised it's been quite a while since I last blogged.

Dunno what I'm so busy with but its been a crazy month of May. Haiz...

Ok, here's some updates:

Visited Kusu Island in early May.
Nothing much to do there so we only ate self-prepared fingerfood, played layang and fed fish/turtles.. duh..

Met up with Azu at Sanur Restaurant, Woodlands Causeway Point, when she was in Singapore in May. She's so pretty!

Went for Giselle's one month birthday bash too! I like this photo - shows the motherly side of Yvonne. But whose hand is that?! Spoilt the photo lah..

Had a farewell home party for Saya as she's moving place soon..
Look at Desmond! Haha! And we sure downed quite abit that day.. hehe..

Forever Grasshoppers!!!

Nayr and I were always thinking that we must have super memory lopes... We remembered so many songs at the Forever Grasshoppers Concert last night at Indoor Stadium! All despite us not understanding most of the cantonese the three guys were saying the whole night.

But i must say the mood at the concert was one of the highest I've been to.. Nayr and i even stood up to dance along to the quick and upbeat music, i even got so high i was jumping up and down and perspired so much!

Looking around, we realised Dragonfly must be pretty quiet and suffering bad business last night. haha..

ps. *LOVE! LOVE! ABC, ABC...* a classic song we remembered!! think the song was popular when we were in P3 or P4!

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Nayr and I went to watch the S'pore Repertory Theatre's A Midsummer Night's Dream on 12 May 2007 with our couple friends.

Watching the show really brought back fond memories of when i was part of the cast back then in ELDDS in Sec 3 (i played the fairy mustardseed) - all the rehearsals in school and at drama centre, woah... got me feeling really nostalgic and all... was looking around to see i'll meet familiar faces too, but didnt see any leh...

The show was really good.. Nice humour with modern touches.. I like the girl who played Helena and the guy who played Moonlight was so serious, yet funny!

And the idea of watching a play, picnic-styled, on an elevated field(and not wet, despite a downpour earlier) which Nayr and i had just taken matrimonial pics at just 2 months ago, is quite nice, I must say..

RIP Arissa

Just got some very sad news from Japan, our Japanese Admin staff Arissa had just passed away.
Arissa was in charge of the Singapore Contingent, so Gnil and me always got to talk to her... She was such a cheerful person, and always so happy to see us... We used to tease her to link arms with Ramlan when we are walking and she will be very sporting about it. We were so happy that we had her as the Admin staff for our contingent! I remembered she will report "Singapore Completo!" when the SPYs are all in.

RIP, we will always remember your warmth and kindness.

Plastic-man Hong

On our trip to Japan last December, Hazuki was nice enough to buy a few packs of these DIY kits called Pla-ban, which are very common in Japan as an activity for school kids.

I was quite curious about them and finally got time to test them out, (we just got an oven in our dept) results as below!

Each packet has a few sheets of plastic and key rings. The plastic sheets are yellow here becasue this kit is supposed to be special Glow-in-the-Dark sheets! You just need to use permament markers to draw the desired shape and then pop it in the oven for a few minutes and *Bish*, it magically morphs into this hard 3D shaped plastic which you can attach the key ring to!

Here are the results of my experiments! The bumblebee/dog shape was originally of the size in b/w! It shrank to about 1/4 of the original size.

This one looks way better, think it was because of the circular shape. I like this one.

Showed my colleagues and they are quite interested in ordering this in bulk as a activity for our events, so went to the website listed on the package but it's filled with incomprehensive Japanese, bah!

it's REALLY such a SMALL SMALL world

there are some friends we have never gotten to meet in Singapore, but, guess what? We met them overseas!!

We bumped into Junjie and his colleague in Bangkok in 2006!
We even took the same flight home!

We bumped into David and his wife in Krabi in 2007!
We also took the same flight home!

it's REALLY a small world

it's REALLY a small world

nayr and i realised we have some mutual friends, and we decided we shall dedicate this post to them, for knowing such WONDERFUL people like us.. haha

Sharon - Nayr's NS Buddy's GF and my Sec Sch Mate
Ziling - Nayr's Sec Sch classmate and my JC classmate
ChipSoon - Nayr's NS Mate and my CDC/HR colleague
TanPohLay - Nayr's SSC working partner and my JC classmate

it's a small world

jus realised recently there are so many friends (or rather colleagues) from my workplace (organisation) who were from the same secondary school as i was!

i realised when a sec sch friend sent me an email regarding a school alumni dinner. (& I didnt even know she's working in my organisation till she sent the email)

And yday morning, a close working colleague (fr another div) sent me a hello email saying she didnt know I was her sch mate too. We had a gd time reminising old times over emails.

it's such a small world.

If (r)Yan can cook, so can you (and so can the whole world too)

Read thesundaytimes on 15 Apr, and pges L26, 27 on "50 ways to pick MEE up" left me much drooling and craving for a simple fare of instant noodles...

so the very evening, after a nice nap, i dragged nayr to go NTUC with me to choose our instant mee brand/flavor & some eggs, ham and canned pork ribs [bought some ice-cream as dessert too. =)] to whip out some instant mee dishes according to the newspaper article.
we chose the canned pork leg with mushroom noodle and the indonesian mee goreng.

The entire cooking process back at home went quite well (with much excitement, adventure & jus a little bit of kalang kabok) & I must mention that nayr did all the cooking - I am only the facilitator. and dishwoman too lah..

And surprisingly, the noodles tasted better than i imagined them to be.
hmm.. will give him 70 marks out of 100 for the good job.

Nayr is happy that his training during the hours he spent on DS Lite's Cooking Mama paid off.

So, if rYAN can cook, so can the whole world, right?

KRB Series: Nature Visits

Nature came to visit us (hmm, i think they came to visit me, not nayr) quite often at our outdoor bathroom. We had an average of one guest per night. =)

First Night: Mr Spider came - he stayed glued on the wall, and was so close to the toilet bowl - luckily he's not the hairy-looking, disgusting kind - quite the usual, black and harmless-looking fellow - I kind of liked him. Nayr did not. He disappeared after that.

First Night: Mdm Big Red Ant - think she molested my butt for a while - but quite harmless - think i kinda gave her a fright with my sudden appearance. Ha! Cos she disappeared after that and none of her family members came visiting - hmm, she must have warned them.

First Night onwards: Mr Lizard was our security guard - he would occasionally peep out from behind the washbasin mirror, made sure we are the correct guests and then swiftly return back to his hideout.

Second Night: Mr Frog - tsk tsk tsk, i must say he was very nasty to have played the camouflage game with nayr! Who would have noticed him? He could have lost his life if nayr decided to do some step aerobics while showering! Anyway, he should slim down cos nayr thought he was a toad - eww, i hate toads - luckily this one's a frog - and a very cute one -he was doing hoppity hop the whole night!

Last Night: Old Mdm Moth - okay, i think she came looking for nayr, not me. sorry, dun like her, so nothing much to comment.

KRB Series: The Krabi-ian Tourists' Favourite Flavour Award

Cast your Vote for the Krabi-ian Tourists' Favourite Flavour Award!

Candidate No.1 - Iced Ginger Tea
The drink that awaits you at your resort room after your long flight from home. With finely crushed ice filled to 2/3rd of the miniature glass, the first sip leaves your throat feeling a surge of refreshing coolness... The second sensation is one of heavenly sweetness that blends so amazingly well with the drink's slight tinge of gingerly taste...

Plus point - there is only one serving - so it leaves you craving for more..

Candidate No.2 - Peppermint Body Gel
What's better than a light concoction of body gel, that foams with a slight lather and leaves you coming out of the shower with a sweet-smelling peppermint-flavoured aroma? The simple-looking bottle that contains this refreshing body gel may look deceiving but after you discover its treasure within, you will look forward to returning back to shower everyday, and be awed by how it immediately takes away all your weariness/aches from your snorkelling day trips...

Plus point - this comes complimentary from the resort - so you can pamper yourself everyday - and with whatever much quantity you desire!

So, Ginger vs Peppermint, what's your vote?

Bloodfilled Sunday

Yesterday was a bloodfilled Sunday..

first of all, i ate this super red and blood(y)-lookin chicken in the mornin at the HV - cooked by some aunties. It was supposed to be hong2 zao1 ji1, they said - to make it worse (or better) - the serving was cold - cold and blood(y) chicken - and i kinda liked it - ate 2 servings somemore..
[blood(y) level: 5]

in the noon, went to watch 300 with Nayr & pals - wah, never knew watchin pple gettin killed brutally, like humans' killing of chickens during flu epedimic, can be so shiok and ENJOYABLE to some extent... my favourite scene is the one where this giant beast's head was chopped off - all in slow mo - smirk smirk smirk...
[blood(y) level: 9.999]

in the nite, went to eat superb food at Gyu-kaku at UE Square with shipmates - so, of course, after a much blood-acquainted day - i really enjoyed the medium-rare pieces of juicy and succulent beef (which usually i wont)..
[blood(y) level: 7]

tsk tsk, wat a violent girl i've become, tsk tsk..

Dun "Uncle" me hor

Had an event for the past 3 days where I got to see many young people from the JCs and secondary schools, like my alma mater, which is a part of my job that I like.

Was chatting to them when I realised that I am TEN years older than some of them!

OMG where did the years go? Felt like yesterday that I was playing footy in my well-used school field...

Felt strange to have them calling me "Sir"... guess that in my heart, I am still in my early 20s!

Well, luckily none of them called me "Uncle"! That will be damn sad sia.

Happy 3 8 Day!

Didnt realise today is 8 March - 3 8 Women's Day until G messaged me in the afternoon..

Happy 3 8 Women's Day to all the 3 8 women in the world! Uh, i mean all the women lah...

Important lessons of R.O.M.

Remember things to bring along, Remind all your guests, Ransack your mum's possesison of assessories early so u dun have to use the Bridal Studio's Orbid (old-fashioned) necklace (blaah!), Rehearse photoshoot poses (so u dun have to perspire with ur photographers under the sun, trying to think of poses, while your makeup melts, haha) and Reap the most out of the buffet reception (shd have asked for discount and complimentary carpark coupons, aiya!)

be On time, and not to be Overkiasu to do your makeup so early, end up u go to ROM so early, and then because u told your guests to arrive so early, EVERYONE had nothing to do, but W A I T. (I wld hereby like to sincerely apologise to all our guests, whom i think, have finished examining all their ten fingers by the end of the wait, hmm, maybe plus finished counting all the folds on the palms as well)
Important: Observe which guest(s) eats the most at your buffet. He/She may jolly well be the person who will drink up all your wine/beer supply during your actual dinner and make sure he/she earns his/her angpao worth back. haha..

lastly, Make sure you remember to complain about any nasty service you received, for example, if a lady at L*ve- That-B*nds talked to u in quite a stern and unfriendly tone, keeps asking you to control your guests and asked them to keep their volumes down, keeps chasing u and guests to go up to the suite and asking how come your guests havent all arrived, and making remarks like Eh, why your ring pillow like that one?

ok?

Excitement as Big Day comes..

suddenly feel quite excited about the BIG DAY on Tuesday 6th March... looking forward to it! Hope Gnil is feeling the same way :)

Ryan's KHI

I have decided to do up a Ryan's Knee Happiness Index (KHI), to update about the recovery progress of my knee ACL, which I torn last December playing footy.

Here's the explanation of the KHI from past to present:

10 Dec - 14.12 - A low for the KHI as Ryan's broken his left knee ACL during a normal game of Sunday footy at NTU. Only way to go is up!

28 Dec - 32.32 - Ryan's knee undergoes surgery at Gleneagles hospital, leading to slight increase in KHI. More rehab to follow.

4 Jan - 55.23 - An increase of 20+ points from the 1st knee post-op analysis, doctor's comments: "excellent, recovering well"

11 Jan - 80.43 - Another increase as doctor's good analysis from 2nd post-op knee check-up.

18 Jan90.32 – Slight increase from Physio treatments, able to walk normally

25 Jan123.32 – good increase in KHI from knee doctor’s continual encouragement of progress and treatment

31 Jan240.27 – huge gains in KHI resulting from change in physiotherapist to young pretty female physiotherapist (YPFP)!

7 Feb259.32 – only sight increase as boredom from physio treatments sets in

15 Feb 302.62 – another good increase. Overheard a guy trying to pick up YPFP

23 Feb402.23 – Permitted to start slow jogging after Knee doctor’s examination! KHI jumps 100 points

1 Mar362.12 – A small dip as YPFP was unavailable, attended by another physio

Dads have super powers

I just opened an online trading account with KE brokerage, coz it's been something that I have been wanting to do and learn... the opportunity came up as one of my Hall friends started working as a remiser, so got all the forms signed etc and just got my account last week.

So what happened was that I bought one lot of this local company for a few hundred bucks, just for testing of the system, nothing too serious... quite exciting to see the numbers jump up and down on the STI sia.

2 days later, my mother suddenly came into my room and started scolding me for wasting money by buying the stock! Imagine lah, I just woke up and my mum started scolding me while I had this just woke up "huh? simi dai zi" look. Turns out that my father, dunno where he found out from, knew exactly what stock I bought and what I paid for it! Shen!

Dad then gave me some advice for buying which I will remember next time.. and I still dun know how he managed to find out! Shall just attribute this to Father's all-knowing special powers of their offspring.. hopefully this is something I will get in the future.. heheh

sweet surprises in february

need i say more?

haha, G is gg to say my posts are erxin again.. haha

nicest way to start a mornin

You wake up late & see your loved one next to u, and then he/she starts to wake up too.
You then share with each other your dreams/nitemares the night before & laugh together about it.
He/she then makes breakfast for u (surprise!) while u were washin up.
Tho it's just simple cheese toast with 3-in-1 teh tarik,
i think it's the most beautiful and nicest way to start a mornin... =)

Child Language (2)

Our childhood game has evolved.

Nyar & i were playing with my two nieces yesterday. There was a part where we had to decide who goes first.

So i said, "let's play O-ah-Peh-ah-Som"

So we went:

"O-ah-Peh-ah...

Som!?"

No, it didn't end there..

my nieces continued chanting..

Som-ba-le-le, roti prata, char kway TEOW!!"

? ? ?

Our childhood game has evolved.

Child Language (1)

Realised interesting facts about children this CNY...

My cousin came visitin on Day 1. Her 1-year old daughter suddenly came running into my parent's master bedroom, and started shouting "gng gng! gng gng! gng gng!" in front of the locked toilet (my sis was using it). i didn't understand, so i asked her what she wanted, and she repeated "gng gng! gng gng! gng gng!"

Later i realised she was looking for her grandpa (which is "gong gong" in mandarin)

However, i came to realise that she can pronounce "gong" as she could rattle off "gong xi gong xi" rather accurately.

Me: "Say gong xi gong xi!"
Child: "gong xi gong xi!"
Me" "Say gong gong"
Child: "Gng Gng"
Me: "gong xi gong xi!"
Child:"gong xi gong xi!"
Me: . . . .

Pai Seh...

pai seh..

pai seh to say that i think i'm gg to get hooked on maplestory..

haha.. tsk tsk...

The Story of Ang Paos

Decided to count my ang paos today..

One.two.three..twenty, twenty-one. yes, i got twenty-one angpaos this year! yipeee! wah, the most number of angpaos i've received in years leh. guess all the tired arms and legs from serving drinks and snacks to relatives paid off. of coz the visiting to the other side's family was a big contribution too..

to celebrate, i threw myself onto the pile of angpaos strewn all over my bedroom floor... see, dat's me lyin on top of the pile! haha...

but then, it's so ironic since it's going to be the last year of buntiful receiving, cos from next year onwards (or at latest, the year after next), nayr and i will be the ones giving away angpaos to kids who will then answer us, "thank you, uncle, auntie".

AUNTIE!!!!!

OMG!!

Happy new year!

A big "Lelcome!" for everyone who drops by and hugz to Gnil for setting up this blog.

The year 2006 was certainly an exciting year for me, travelled a lot overseas and spent time with my darling... the highlight definitely was the Japan trip with the ring buying, proposal and secret planning! With thanks to Ah Foo and the JPYs .. Tokyo Tower would never be the same again for me and hope to visit there again someday

Come to think of it, 2006 was unlucky for me in terms of illnesses and injuries, I remembered I got 1x Sprained Ankle, 1 x deep cut at eye from clash of heads, 3 x flu bugs (I get these often) and 1 x torn knee ligament. So 2 days ago when I went to the temple, I prayed to the Tua Peh Kong that last year already Fan4 Tai4 Sui4 liao, so hope that this year has no problems for me and Gnil.

So far my luck has been good, won a bit from Mahjong and 21, so let's hope it continues!

To my darling Gnil, let's have a good year together and look forward to spending my future years with you baby

Happy Oink Oink Year!

Happy Year of da Pig 2007!

Well, in case u are wonderin how come i've still got time to post a blog & not out somewhere bai4 nian2, it's bcos this year my family will not be visitin m'sia on chu1yi1 as in past years! (cos my relatives' all comin over to visit us instead! mum actually only told me coldly a few days ago "oh, we will zobo & wait for pple to come visit - wat a cool reply! ha!"

Year of the Dog has been one of the most amazing years i've had in all my 27 years! and i gotta definitely thank Nayr for being the catalyst of everything. Love ya =)

I visited so many places in a year (burned quite a big hole in pocket). Bali (I really miss Bali), Sengarang Indonesia (twice!), Taiwan, Thailand & Japan!

Since i mentioned Japan, must definitely mention that Nayr did the sweetest thing for me in Dec 07, during our trip to Japan. i really didn't expect the proposal to come at all! to think i'm usually smart enough to see through his moves - but somehow not this time.

And to think i was the one who planned the trip itinerary - it was supposed to be a ultra-packed schedule that day, and i was even in a grouchy mood that mornin and we were supposed to meet someone else after that- imagine how jittery he must have felt then... anyway, his romantic proposal that night at the top of tokyo towers is still deeply etched in my memories - and of course, i said yes. =)

So... this year is going to be a really really busy year for us, prep for weddin and everything...

phew!

finally ah...

finally ah..

Finally, i've decided to get over the pekcekness of searchin high & low for dat stoopid lost account of mine (okok, i've to admit dat it is due to my stupidity, nothin to do with blogger.com, but still... $%^&*)

Now, can everyone pls go to www.ryanpeiling.blogspot.com and say some words of prayer for the poor unborn blogchild. (sob sob) And dun ask me abt it, i'm still a bit sad..

ANYWAY, so here's this stepblogchild whom i've decided to love with all my heart and devote rest of my life to (uh, i actually mean to say: for as long as i'm stil interested in bloggin)

last but not least, like what the Masseur Auntie we met in Bangkok said "Lelcome, lelcome!"

"Lelcome to our blog ah!"
